As a touring base

Moffat is about one mile from junction 15 on the M74, about 35 north of Carlisle, 50 south of Glasgow and 50 south of Edinburgh. This makes it an excellent touring base by car or bike for both sides of the Border. Day trips to Glasgow or Edinburgh by service bus or your own transport then perhaps use "park and ride". Visit the museums, Edinburgh Castle, retail therapy or Edinburgh Festival in August.

As a centre for walking, fishing , and for touring around:

• The town dates back to 1218 and developed around 1878 when the Hydropathic Hotel opened. Interesting specialist shops still trade from the Victorian buildings. Try Moffat Toffee Shop trading since the 1880s.
• Moffat Museum has expanded to a new site.D
• White Coomb at 2695 feet is the highest peak in the area.
• Grey Mares Tail waterfall on the Selkirk road. Climb to the top and walk round Loch Skene. Peregrines nest here.
• Ae forest for mountain biking. Castles and coast within an hour.
• St Mary's Loch for a gentle stroll. The sailing club members may be on the water.
• Gala Week, Country Fair at Drumlanrig Castle, Classic Car Rally.
• Many restaurants and cafes mostly on the main street. A wide range of places to eat with something for every budget. From snacks through pub grub to gourmet meals.
• New Year's Eve celebrations in the main street. Locals and visitors meet to enjoy the fireworks display to bring in the New Year.

The main street is an easy five minutes walk. Parking here is free and without time restriction.
